Major events in Germany dedicated to the Armenian Genocide Centenary

On April 21 the reciting of Varouzhan Voskanian’s “The Book of Whispers’” took place in the House of Literature of Berlin in the frameworks of the “Worldwide Reading”. The event attended by the author himself was dedicated to the Centenary of the Armenian Genocide.

On April 22 40 hour reading of Franz Werfel's novel «40 days of Musa Dag» took place in Nurnberg Ballet and Opera Theatre.

On April 23, Ecumenical service, dedicated to the Genocide of Armenians, Assyrians and Pontic Greeks in Ottoman Empire took place in Berlin Cathedral. Betford Strohm, Head of the Evangelical Church of Germany delivered welcoming speech. Archbishop Garegin Bekdjian, Primate to the Armenian Diocese of Germany, delivered a prayer in memory of innocent victims of the Armenian Genocide. The Service ended with an extensive speech by Cardinal Reinhard Marx, Head of the Catholic Church of Germany, Chairman of Bishops Conference of Germany.

After the service Joachim Gauck, President of the Federal Republic of Germany, made speech in which he clearly stated that mass killings of Armenians in Ottoman Empire were Genocide, and in this case Germans in general must apply to the process of rethinking, especially when it comes to the share of Germany's responsibility for genocide committed against the Armenians.

The event was attended by Vice-speakers of Bundestag, Deputies, chairmen of parliamentary fractions, Ambassadors, accredited to Germany, members of German Government, writers, public figures, journalists, representatives of the Armenian, Assyrian, Greek and Jewish communities of Germany.
After the event participants made a candlelight procession from Cathedral to Brandenburg gate.

On April 24, special session of the German Bundestag, dedicated to the Armenian Genocide took place. Angela Merkel, Chancellor of the Federal Republic of Germany, and Frank-Walter Steinmeier, Foreign Minister, as well as other members of the Government attended the event. Speaker of the Bundestag Norbert Lammert, who opened the session, clearly stated in his speech that there was a genocide committed against the Armenians in Ottoman Empire in 1915. Members of all the Bundestag parties made speeches. 8 out of 9 deputies called on their colleagues to recognize the Armenian Genocide and not to avoid to call historical events by their names.
On April 24 major community event dedicated to the Centenary of the Armenian Genocide took place in St. Paul’s Church in Frankfurt. Head of the board of the Council of Armenians in Germany Nazareth Agheguian, Chargé d'affaires of Armenia to Germany Ashot Smbatyan and Professor of the Konstanz University Aleida Assmann made speeches. Singers Michael Babadjanian and Karine Babadjanian performed works by Komitas Vardapet and Armen Tigranyan.

On the same day reading of Varouzhan Voskanian’s book “The Book of Whispers’” and commemoration evening, dedicated to the victims of the Armenian Genocide, were organized by two Armenian communities of Berlin.

On April 25, Armenian communities of Germany organized an unprecedented march through Berlin to demand that the German Government recognize the Armenian Genocide. More than 6 thousand Armenians, that arrived from different Lands of Germany, participated in the march.

On the same day, ab event entitled «The Centenary of the Armenian Genocide: Hamburg remembers the victims of 1915» took place in Kaiser Hall of Hamburg Rathaus. The event was organized by the Hamburg Branch of CDU and the local Armenian Community. Councils, accredited in Hamburg, members of Bundestag and State Diets, political and public figures, representatives of the Armenian, Assyrian and Greek communities of Germany attended the event. First Deputy Speaker of the Hamburg Parliament Dietrich Werzich, Bundestag member Jurgen Klimke, member of the North Westphalia State Diet Bernhard von Grunberg, Dr. Tessa Savvidis-Hoffmann, Turkish writer and publicist Dogan Akhanli and member of the Federation of Assyrians in Germany Zeki Aydin made speeches.

«Gayane» Choir and «David» Quartet performed works by Armenian composers.

From April 20 to April 26 events dedicated to the Centenary of the Armenian Genocide took place in German cities Stuttgart, Munich, Oldenburg, Kehl, Erfurt, Jena, Erlangen and Cologne.
