Meeting of the Foreign Minister of Armenia with the IPU Secretary General

30 January, 2024

On January 30, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Armenia Ararat Mirzoyan had a meeting with Martin Chungong, the Secretary General of the Inter-Parliamentary Union.

Emphasizing the role of parliamentary diplomacy, the interlocutors discussed the opportunities provided through active interaction and joint initiatives, and for that purpose the holding of the 10th Global Conference of Young Parliamentarians of the IPU in Yerevan can create a favorable environment.

It was emphasized that in the conditions of increasing instability in different corners of the world, parliamentary frameworks can play a role by speaking up about the violations of international law, developing a public discussion on possible fair solutions, and thereby contributing to peace efforts.

In this context, views were exchanged on the issues of security and stability in the South Caucasus. Minister Mirzoyan thoroughly briefed the IPU Secretary General on Armenia’s vision of ensuring stability in the region, including the key principles in the normalization process of Armenia-Azerbaijan relations. The importance of the unequivocal respect for territorial integrity, inviolability of borders and sovereignty was stressed. Minister Mirzoyan emphasized the clear intention and commitment of the Republic of Armenia in this regard, adding that on the other hand, the maximalistic rhetoric and non-constructive steps do not contribute to the realization of the peace agenda in the region.
