Armenia and EU held Annual Dialogue on Human Rights

On 7 November, Armenia and the European Union held their 12th Human Rights Dialogue in Brussels. 

The Armenian delegation was headed by Ara Margarian, the Head of the European Department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The delegation consisted of Deputy Minister of Justice Armenuhi Harutyunyan and Kristinne Grigoryan, Armenia's Human Rights Defender. The EU delegation was headed by Dorota Dlouchy-Suliga, the Head of Division in the European External Action Service. 

The dialogue engaged a wide range of topics on human rights and fundamental freedoms of all citizens, including of persons in vulnerable situation and the fight against discrimination on any ground, in order to build a more inclusive society and a better functioning democracy. Participants have also discussed gender equality, fight against domestic violence, the rights of the child, labor rights, improvement of detention conditions, as well as freedom of expression and information and elimination of hate speech and disinformation.

The sides exchanged views on the positive developments related to human rights in Armenia, the need to further improve the human rights situation in Armenia, as well as the government plans to carry out a constitutional review process and further plans aimed at improving the electoral system. The EU committed to continue providing Armenia with financial and technical assistance on key areas of human rights, particularly for the implementation of the human rights related provisions of the CEPA.

Armenia informed about Azerbaijan’s attacks on Armenia’s sovereign territory in September and their grave consequences on the human rights of the persons residing in the affected territories.
