26 April, 2022

On April 26, Foreign Minister of Armenia Ararat Mirzoyan, who is on a working visit to India, participated as a speaker in the "The doctrine of lapse: Lessons from the UN era" panel discussion held within the framework of the "Raisina Dialogue".

The participants of the panel discussion touched upon in detail the preservation of peace and security, the system of multilateral diplomacy, its advantages and challenges.

In his speech, Ararat Mirzoyan noted that Armenia attaches great importance to the effective works of international organizations, emphasizing their role in sustainable development, peace, democracy and protection of human rights. In this context, it was stressed that over the past three decades, Armenia has demonstrated its commitment to the principles and goals of the United Nations.

The Foreign Minister of Armenia noted with regret that over the seven decades of the UN's existence, the world has witnessed numerous wars and catastrophes which the system of multilateral diplomacy failed to prevent. At the same time, he stressed that in a modern world full of challenges, from the COVID-19 pandemic and climate change to military clashes, it is vital to maintain multilateralism as a platform for dialogue. In this regard, the need to improve the relevant UN mechanisms to effectively counter all these challenges was emphasized.

During the discussion, Ararat Mirzoyan referred to Azerbaijan's aggression against Nagorno-Karabakh and the situation in the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict zone as another serious challenge multilateral diplomacy encounters.

“As the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Armenia and as an ordinary Armenian, I want to remind the audience about the war that took place two years ago in our region - Nagorno-Karabakh. Please, by the show of hands, can you tell me how many of you were aware of it? How many of you spoke about it? How many of you demanded that the UN act to prevent new ethnic cleansing of Armenians in Nagorno-Karabakh?" said Ararat Mirzoyan.
