Deputy Foreign Minister participated in Red Cross Red Crescent Conference

From December 10 to 12, Deputy Foreign Minister of Armenia Artak Apitonyan, who is in Geneva on a working visit, participated in the 33rd International Conference of the Red Cross and Red Crescent and delivered remarks during the Plenary Session.

In his speech, Artak Apitonyan presented Armenia’s approach to the need for implementing coordinated actions of the international community aimed at resisting disastrous humanitarian situations, attaching importance both to the full implementation of Human Rights regardless of country and status of the territory and the early prevention of genocides and mass atrocities. 

Touching upon the programmes implemented by the International Committee of the  Red Cross in Armenia, Artak Apitonyan emphasized particularly the security of the residents and increasing school safety in border regions as well as the continuity of monitoring ceasefire in the agricultural regions.

Deputy Foreign Minister touched upon the activity of the Armenian Red Cross Society which will mark its 100th anniversary in the upcoming year.

Deputy Foreign Minister highly appreciated the efforts of the Red Cross volunteers and missionaries who saved thousands of lives during the Armenian Genocide, established orphanages, schools and helped people in need, calling upon the international community to spare no effort in assisting the individuals who are engaged in humanitarian activities, in particular, the activity of women.

On December 11, Artak Apitonyan met with Gillian Triggs, the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR).

The two sides touched upon the issues of the first Global Refugee Forum to be held in Geneva on December 17-18, exchanged views on international cooperation on the agenda for refugees and displaced persons. Deputy Foreign Minister presented Armenia’s positive experience and achievements in the direction of effective integration.

On the same day, Artak Apitonyan met with David Chikvaidze, Chef de Cabinet to Director-General of the United Nations Office at Geneva (UNOG). In the course of the meeting, the two sides touched upon the effective cooperation between Armenia and the UNOG.

On the same day, the Permanent Representative of Armenia to the UN Office at Geneva gave a reception in honour of the visit of Deputy Foreign Minister of Armenia which was attended by employees of Armenian origin and other UN international organizations operating in Geneva. Irina Ghaplanyan, Deputy Minister of Environment, who is in Geneva on a working visit, was also present at the reception.
