The Meeting of Zohrab Mnatsakanyan with Carmelo Abela, the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade Promotion of Malta

On June 27, Foreign Minister Zohrab Mnatsakanyan met with Carmelo Abela, the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade Promotion, who is in Armenia on a working visit. 

Foreign Ministers of Armenia and Malta highly appreciated regular contacts between Foreign Ministries on the international fora and highlighted the first visit of Maltese delegation to Armenia in bilateral format, which attests to the reciprocal readiness to undertake practical steps towards the further deepening and improving of the Armenian-Maltese agenda. The interlocutors underscored the signing of Memorandum of Understanding on consultations between Foreign Ministries of the two countries (signed this February) as a good impetus for fully utilizing the potential of political dialogue existing between Armenia and Malta.

Foreign Ministers exchanged views on prospects of developing bilateral and multilateral cooperation. Special attention was paid to the elaboration and implementation of initiatives aimed at promoting trade and economic relations, the steps aimed at expanding relevant legal framework were underscored.

Zohrab Mnatsakanyan and Carmelo Abela also touched upon the Armenia-EU partnership underlining the importance of Comprehensive and Enhanced Partnership Agreement as a solid legal basis for cooperation with the EU and  EU member states both in bilateral and multilateral formats. Within the context of the 10th anniversary of the Eastern Partnership the sides mentioned, that this jubilee is a good occasion to refer to the achievements reached and outline the perspectives of joint work. Both sides highlighted the promotion and expansion of people to people contacts as an important factor for strengthening relations between the states.

The interlocutors highly appreciated the existing cooperation between the two countries and reciprocal support in international organizations, within that context, particularly emphasizing the platform of the International Organization of La Francophonie. 

The Foreign Minister of Armenia presented to his Maltese counterpart the principled position and approaches of Armenia in Nagorno-Karabakh peace process stressing the importance of creating an environment conducive to peace and, in that framework, the need of strengthening the ceasefire regime and implementing risk reduction measures. 

The meeting was followed by the joint press conference. 

Earlier on the same day, Foreign Minister of Malta and his delegation visited the Tsitsernakaberd Memorial Complex.
