Response by the Foreign Ministry Spokesperson to the question of Aysor.am about the escalation of situation on the Armenian-Azerbaijani border

05 October, 2019

Question. Recently, there has been an escalation on the Armenian-Azerbaijan international border. What is the situation on the ground and what steps are taken to reduce the tension?

Answer: The Ministry of Foreign Affairs is deeply concerned about the escalation of the situation in the northern part of the Armenian-Azerbaijani border and condemns steps aimed at deliberately escalating the situation. During the recent incidents, one serviceman of Armenian Armed Forces was killed and three soldiers were wounded. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs expresses its deepest condolences to the family and relatives of the killed serviceman and wishes a speedy recovery to the wounded servicemen.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Armenia is in constant coordination with the Ministry of Defense. All possible measures have been put in place to reduce tension. Recalling the statement of the OSCE Minsk Group Co-Chairs issued on June 20, 2019, the Armenian side insists that the Azerbaijani side should refrain from any provocative action, including conducting military-engineering work and involvement of alleged civilians along the Armenian-Azerbaijani international border.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs prioritizes the undertaking of effective steps to reduce further tension and consolidate the ceasefire, which is an important part of a peaceful settlement.
