On September 10, in Prague, within the framework of the Concluding Meeting of the 32nd OSCE Economic and Environmental Forum, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Trade of Armenia Robert Abisoghomonyan participated in and delivered a keynote address at the session entitled “The Role of Science in Diplomacy.”

In his remarks, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Trade presented the key priorities and vision of Armenia’s Presidency of the 17th meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity (COP17), highlighting the complementary roles of science and diplomacy in addressing global environmental challenges.

Robert Abisoghomonyan emphasized the importance of scientific data and expert knowledge in the development of policies and decision-making processes aimed at biodiversity conservation, noting that science can contribute both to a deeper assessment of existing and emerging risks and to their anticipation and the development of effective responses.

Referring to the preparations for COP17, the Deputy Minister highlighted the inclusive approach adopted by the Armenia’s Presidency, aimed at the full and meaningful engagement of governments, international organizations, scientific and academic communities, civil society, youth, women, Indigenous Peoples and local communities, as well as the private sector.

Presenting the events planned within the framework of COP17, Robert Abisoghomonyan referred to the “Leaders for Nature” Summit, which is expected to result in the adoption of the “Yerevan Call for Action” political declaration, reaffirming the central role of biodiversity in sustainable development, food security, climate resilience and well-being.

The Deputy Minister also emphasized the importance of the first Global Review of collective progress towards the implementation of the goals and targets of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework. It was noted that the Review will provide an opportunity to assess progress achieved, identify existing gaps, and determine areas requiring further efforts.

Robert Abisoghomonyan also addressed Armenia’s initiatives within the framework of COP17, aimed at expanding positive environmental incentives, promoting the exchange of experience on effective area-based conservation measures, developing biodiversity monitoring systems through new technologies, as well as strengthening international cooperation in the conservation of mountain and freshwater ecosystems.

Concluding his remarks, the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Trade of the Republic of Armenia reaffirmed Armenia’s readiness to continue cooperation with OSCE participating States and international partners to ensure ambitious, forward-looking and practical outcomes within the framework of COP17 in Yerevan.
