Political consultations between the Ministries of Foreign Affairs of Armenia and Latvia

On June 5, political consultations between the Ministries of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Armenia and the Republic of Latvia were held in Riga. The Armenian delegation was headed by Deputy Foreign Minister Paruyr Hovhannisyan and the Latvian delegation was led by the Deputy State Secretary Andzejs Vilumsons.

During the consultations the parties discussed a wide range of issues of bilateral agenda.

The sides touched upon the possibilities of expanding the bilateral cooperation in the areas of mutual interest, the importance of taking practical steps aimed at boosting bilateral economic ties and discussed important issues of the Armenia-EU partnership agenda. The importance of the further development of the Armenian-Latvian cooperation within the international organizations was emphasized.

During the consultations the Deputy Foreign Minister briefed the Latvian side on the recent developments of the relations between Armenia and Azerbaijan and the situation in Nagorno-Karabakh. In this context, the importance of the deployment of the EU Monitoring Mission in Armenia was highlighted. The Deputy Minister touched upon the illegal blockade of the Lachin Corridor by Azerbaijan, the new encroachments  on the sovereign territory of Armenia, the steps towards normalization of relations between Armenia and Azerbaijan, as well as the issue of unblocking regional communications. Paruyr Hovhannisyan stressed the need for the immediate release of Armenian prisoners of war held in Azerbaijan and the importance of efforts to preserve the Armenian cultural heritage.
