Political Consultations between the Ministries of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Armenia and Republic of Finland

On April 3, political consultations between the Ministries of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Armenia and the Republic of Finland took place in Helsinki. The Armenian delegation was headed by Ara Margarian, Director of the European Department of the MFA of Armenia, and the Finnish delegation was headed by Maria Liivala, Director General of the Department for Russia, Eastern Europe and Central Asia of the MFA of Finland.

During the consultations, the parties discussed a wide range of issues on bilateral agenda, commending the constructive dialogue between the two countries and emphasizing the importance of the further development of relations in the areas of mutual interest. Touching upon the importance of intensifying the economic ties, the parties expressed willingness to take active steps towards strengthening and expanding them. The importance of holding regular political consultations was emphasized as an effective tool to increase partner countries' level of awareness on the current developments in Armenia and the region.

The parties also touched upon a number of issues of regional and international agenda, including the enhanced Armenia – EU partnership, and discussed the possibilities of cooperation within the international organizations fora.

Ara Margarian briefed the Finnish side on the situation in the region as a result of Azerbaijan’s aggression against Armenia and Nagorno-Karabakh, as well as on the humanitarian crisis evolving in Nagorno-Karabakh due to the illegal blockade of the Lachin Corridor.

During the visit, Ara Margarian also participated in the discussion on regional developments at the Finnish Institute of International Affairs (FIIA).
