On July 14, the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Armenia Artak Apitonian delivered a video message at the ministerial segment of the High-Level Political Forum held online under the auspices of the UN Economic and Social Council.

The High-Level Political Forum is the main United Nations platform on sustainable development and it has a central role in the follow-up and review of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development at the global level. On July 10, Armenia presented its second National Voluntary Review on the implementation of the SDGs.

In his speech, the Deputy minister mentioned that based on the broad popular mandate, the Government of Armenia has been implementing ambitious reforms aimed at ensuring sustainable development in the country. The reform agenda includes almost all the areas of public life, especially focusing on human rights protection, rule of law, combating corruption, improved public administration along with large-scale economic and social development.

Mr. Apitonian also referred to the unprecedented situation caused by the COVID-19 pandemic worldwide, reiterating that only through international solidarity, effective multilateralism and coordination of the efforts of the international community, it will be possible to overcome the current challenges and prevent future outbreaks. He shared the conviction that equitable access to all essential health technologies and products to combat the virus is a global priority, and no one, including those living in conflict areas, should be denied or be limited in access to remedies to mitigate the impact of Covid-19.

With the understanding that there is no development without peace, the deputy minister once again mentioned that  Armenia extends its unequivocal support to the UN Secretary-General’s appeal for a global ceasefire and welcomes the adoption of the UN Security Council resolution 2532 on the COVID-19 pandemic demanding “general and immediate cessation of hostilities in all situations”.
