Meeting of Zohrab Mnatsakanyan with the President of the European Court of Human Rights

20 November, 2018

On November 20, the acting Foreign Minister Zohrab Mnatsakanyan met with Guido Raimondi, the President of the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR).

Highly appreciating the cooperation with ECHR Zohrab Mnatsakanyan emphasized that multilateral platforms are of great importance for small countries for expressing the sovereign equality, and today, when this multilateral platform is facing new challenges, the importance of cooperation in promoting universal interests is becoming more relevant.

The acting Foreign Minister stressed that this system for the protection of human rights is unique and can be truly effective only in functioning democracies.

During the meetings, views were exchanged on deepening cooperation between the ECHR and Armenia and on increasing the effectiveness of this cooperation.

The acting Foreign Minister briefed his counterpart on the latest internal political developments in Armenia. He also made reference to the position and approach of Armenia on the Nagorno Karabakh conflict settlement.

Presenting the legal proceedings initiated in Azerbaijan against Karen Ghazaryan, an Armenian citizen who found himself in Azerbaijani territory under unknown circumstances, Mnatsakanyan noted that the proceedings against a person with obvious health issues, initiated in violation of international humanitarian law are worthy of condemnation. He added that by making a farce of these proceedings, an attempt is being made to equate an innocent person with actual murderers.
