Foreign Minister of Armenia Edward Nalbandian meets with the Secretary General of the United Nations Ban Ki-moon and delivers speech at the University of Columbia
01 October, 2009On September 29, Foreign Minister of Armenia Edward Nalbandian who is in New York for a working visit met with the Secretary General of the United Nations Ban Ki-moon.
During the meeting the two touched upon issues of UN agenda and the reformation of the organization, the process of implementation of Millennium Goals, the organization of the Summit of UN member states in 2010, as well as the cooperation between the Government of Armenia and the UN Office in Armenia.
Minister Nalbandian emphasized with satisfaction that the projects implemented in Armenia by the UN different agencies and foundations are successful and attached importance to the signing and efficient implementation of the United Nations Development Assistance Framework (UNDAF) program.
On Ban Ki-moon’s request, Edward Nalbandian presented the process of normalization of Armenian-Turkish relations. The UN Secretary General expressed his support for Armenia’s steps aimed at the normalization of relationship with Turkey. The two also touched upon the settlement of Artsakh (Nagorno Karabakh) issue.
On the same day at the UN Headquarter Edward Nalbandian on behalf of the Republic of Armenia signed the United Nation Optional Protocol to the Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights and the United Nations Convention on Contracts for the International Carriage of Goods Wholly or Partly by Sea.
During the meeting with his Hungarian counterpart Péter Balázs, Edward Nalbandian discussed the preparatory works of the upcoming official visit of Armenian President to Hungary. The two exchanged views on bilateral relations and cooperation within international organizations, Armenia - European Union relations, South Caucasus issues and the processes within the European Union.
The main topics of the meeting between Foreign Minister of Armenia Edward Nalbandian and Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs and Cooperation of Portugal João Gomes Cravinho were the cooperation between the two countries and the perspectives of its development, regional issues and partnership in the international organizations. The two discussed issues concerning the enlargement of legal field, development of economic cooperation, enhancement of ties in the areas of culture and tourism.
During the visit, Armenian Foreign Minister also met with the representatives of Jewish Committee of America. In course of the meeting, they discussed Armenia-Israel relations.
The last point of Edward Nalbandian’s agenda in New York was the lecture on “Security and Cooperation in the South Caucasus” at the School of International and public Affairs at Columbia University.
In his speech Edward Nalbandian presented the steps being undertaken by Armenia aimed at the promotion of security and stability in the region.
Armenian Foreign Minister presented the recent efforts for the settlement of Artsakh (Nagorno Karabakh) issue, the process of normalization of relations between Armenia and Turkey. Minister Nalbandian also touched upon the development of Armenian-American relationship.
Minister answered the numerous questions of the participants.
On the same day, concluding his visit Foreign Minister of Armenia left for Yerevan.
