13 May, 2009

On May 14, Foreign Minister of Armenia Edward Nalbandian received Brian Fall, the United Kingdom Special Representative for the South Caucasus.

During the meeting, the discussions focused on the ways of expanding cooperation of Armenia and Great Britain and the possibilities of intensifying partnership between Foreign Ministries of the two countries. With the proposal of the British side, they agreed to organize regular consultations between Foreign Ministries of Armenia and the United Kingdom.

The two also touched upon the process of normalization of Armenian-Turkish relations. In this context Brian Fall welcomed the recent progress fixed in that direction and expressed hope that the sides would soon start the implementation of agreements.
Commenting Turkish Prime Minister’s statements made yesterday in Baku, Minister Nalbandian mentioned that the attempts of Turkey to interfere in the settlement process of Artsakh (Nagorno Karabakh) issue can harm that process. By Armenian Foreign Minister’s definition the negotiations on the settlement of Artsakh (Nagorno Karabakh) issue are continuing by the mediation of Minsk Group Co-Chairs on the basis of the Madrid proposals and the parties are trying to bring their positions closer. He added that if Turkey wants to support the peaceful settlement of the issue then the right way will be not to interfere in the process of the settlement at all.

Edward Nalbandian and Brian Fall exchanged views on the settlement of Artsakh (Nagorno Karabakh) issue and stressed the necessity of its peaceful settlement on the basis of principles and norms of international law.
