Minister Nalbandian meets with the Secretary General of the Council of the European Union Javier Solana and Belgian Foreign Minister Karel De Gucht in Brussels.
18 June, 2008On 18 of June Minister Edward Nalbandian, who was in Brussels on a working visit, had a meeting with the European Commissioner for External Relations and European Neighbourhood Policy European Commissioner for External Relations and European Neighborhood Policy Benita Ferrero-Waldner.
During the talks the two gave a positive assessment to the implementation of the European Neighborhood Policy Action Plan, and discussed the perspectives of wider cooperation within the frameworks of the ENP.
Minister Nalbandian stressed that Armenia would continue his consistent steps for being closer to the European family. Armenian Foreign Minister expressed his gratitude for the support in he European Union ad its member countries for the process reforms in Armenia.
The two also touched upon the cooperation of different formats of political dialogue between Armenia and EU and implementation of bilateral programs in various areas.
Minister Nalbandian and Commissioner Ferrero-Waldner discussed also the situation in the region of South Caucasus. By the request of the Commissioner the Armenian Foreign Minister presented the recent developments in the Nagorno Karabakh peace process.
On the same day Minister Nalbandian had a meeting with the president of Belgian Senate Armand de Decker.
Praising the close cooperation between the Armenian and Belgian Parliaments, Edward Nalbandian noticed the importance of parliamentary diplomacy in the development of interstate relations.
On his turn the president of the Belgian Senate recalled noticed that the presidents of the previous convocation of the two chambers of Belgian Parliament had visited Armenia, and assured that he was intended to keep the high level of interparliamentary relations.
The two also discussed issues concerning the internal situation in Armenia and Belgium.
They also touched upon the of Nagorno Karabakh peace process and the prospects of Armenian – Turkish relations.
By the request of Minister Nalbandian, Armand De Decker presented the situation after the denial of ratification of Lisbon Treaty by the Irish referendum and the possible ways of ending that situation.
On the meeting with NATO Secretary General Jaap de Hoop Scheffer Minister Nalbandian valued the results of North Atlantic Council session held in 26+1 format (NATO – Armenia) on May 28, 2008. He sated that Armenia attaches importance to the regular consultations in this format.
Armenian Foreign Minister and the NATO Secretary General discussed also the participation of Armenia to the peacekeeping operations. Jaap de Hoop Scheffer expressed hi gratitude for the decision of Armenian Parliament to double the number of Armenian peacekeepers in Kosovo.
Minister Nalbandian also noted that Armenia appreciates the assistance of NATO and Alliance member states in the realization of Armenia-NATO Individual Partnership Action Plan.
On the request of Mr. Scheffer, Edward Nalbandian presented the results of St. Petersburg meeting between Armenian and Azerbaijani Presidents.
During the day Edward Nalbandian had also meetings with the EU Special Representative for the South Caucasus Peter Semneby and with leaders of a number of Pan-European and Belgian Armenian organizations.
