Brief reference on Armenia-UAE relations

Armenia emphasizes the importance to strengthening and deepening high-level relations with the Gulf countries, in which the United Arab Emirates has a unique role. Armenia views the UAE as the strongest link between Armenia and the "Gulf Arab countries", both politically and economically. Armenia attaches great importance to the further development of cooperation with the United Arab Emirates in various fields, for which there is a serious potential.

Bilateral relations
Diplomatic relations between Armenia and the United Arab Emirates were established on June 25, 1998, signing the relevant protocol in New York.

The Embassy of Armenia in Abu Dhabi was founded in 2000, while the Embassy of the UAE in Yerevan was founded in 2015. The Consulate General of the Republic of Armenia was established in Dubai in 2017.

The first session of Armenia-UAE Intergovernmental Joint Commission was held in Yerevan in May, 2010. The financial, trade, economic, food security and scientific-educational spheres were highlighted as priority directions of cooperation.

The primary areas of trade and economic cooperation are information technology, agriculture, jewelry, diamonds, food security, renewable energy, and tourism. Prior to the pandemic crisis, bilateral trade was not extensive, but the dynamics was positive. In 2019 exports from Armenia to the UAE amounted to $ 57.3 million, imports from the UAE- $ 281.2 million, total- $ 338.5 million.

As of 2019, 635 UAE companies are registered in Armenia. From the perspective of strengthening economic, cultural, tourism and humanitarian ties, the direct flights from Abu Dhabi to Yerevan are important.

ExpoDubai-2020 will be a new impetus for the development of bilateral cooperation. Armenia is one of the first countries to confirm its participation in this event of international significance.

31 cooperation documents have been signed between Armenia and the UAE on investment promotion, excluding double taxation, trade, economic, legal aid, culture, education, science, health, agriculture, tourism, Arpa-Sevan tunnel rehabilitation financing, air communication, customs cooperation, security cooperation and fight against terrorism and other areas.

The cooperation within the international platforms and multilateral formats has a great importance in bilateral relations.

Fight against COVID-19 pandemic

Armenia highly appreciates the humanitarian aid provided to Armenia by the UAE authorities for the fight against COVID-19 pandemic. The UAE side provided about 7 tons of assistance to Armenia.

Armenian community
The small but active Armenian community of the United Arab Emirates has contributed to the development of Armenia-UAE friendly relations.

Armenians began to settle in the United Arab Emirates after 1975, immigrating from Syria, Lebanon, Iran, Egypt, Iraq, Armenia, Russia, European countries, USA and Canada.

In 1980 Sharjah-Dubai and Abu Dhabi National Departments were formed. The Ohanesyan Armenian Sunday School in Sharjah started operating in the same year. Since 1998 St. Gregory the Illuminator Church has been operating in Sharjah, since December, 2014 the Holy Martyrs Church in Abu Dhabi has operated. Since December 2016, the Ara Khanoyan Sunday School began operating near the church in Abu Dhabi established in May 2010.
Currently, about 10,000 Armenians live in the UAE. 90% of Armenians living in the UAE hold positions in various state-owned enterprises, mainly involved in construction, engineering and economics.
