Answers of the Foreign Ministry Spokesperson to the questions of journalists.

31 March, 2020

Question: After yesterday’s diversion attempt by Azerbaijan, how would you assess the escalation on the Armenian-Azerbaijani border, particularly in the context when the whole world is engaged not in wars or provoking hostilities, but in the fight against coronavirus?

Anna Naghdalyan: As you are aware, yesterday the Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued a statement strongly condemning the Azerbaijani attempts to escalate the situation on the Armenian-Azerbaijani border. You know, this unprovoked ceasefire violation has no justification, especially when the medical resources of all countries in the world, including all countries in the region, are concentrated on the fight against coronavirus. And with regards to that, I would like to refer to the statement of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued yesterday.

Question: The statement of the Foreign Ministry of Armenia on the March 30 military incident on the Armenian-Azerbaijani border reads: "This unprovoked ceasefire violation has no justification, especially today, when all countries of the world mobilize their medical resources in the fight against COVID19." What is the meaning of the "unprovoked ceasefire violation" phrase?

Anna Naghdalyan: The term "unprovoked" means that the actions of the party, violating the ceasefire were not conditioned on this or that action of the other party. This term is widely used in conflict situations. We are really surprised that some of our experienced experts are just discovering this term for themselves. At the same time, I regret to note that some experts’ difficulties of perceiving internationally recognized military-political terminology are only conditioned by internal political reasons.

Question: Did the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Armenia inform the international structures about the second attempt of infiltration by the Armed Forces of Azerbaijan during the days of the pandemic (the first one took place on March 6)? If yes, to which structures and what were the reactions?

Anna Naghdalyan։ I can say that the Foreign Ministry has well-established instruments for such situations and possesses all the mechanisms for its implementation.
