Participation of Deputy Foreign Minister of Armenia Robert Abisoghomonyan in the Belém Climate Summit

On November 5-7, in Belém, Brazil, on the margins of the Leaders’ Summit convened in the lead-up to the 30th Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP30), Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Armenia Robert Abisoghomonyan had meetings and exchanges with the UN Secretary-General, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Monaco, the President of the Environment Authority of Oman, the Minister of Oil of Kuwait, the Minister of Environment and Climate Change of Sierra Leone, the Minister of Environment and Ecological Transition of Senegal, the Executive Secretary and the Director for Programme Coordination of the UNFCCC Secretariat, the Executive Director of the Loss and Damage Response Fund, as well as the Minister of Indigenous Peoples of Brazil.

Deputy Foreign Minister Robert Abisoghomonyan briefed his interlocutors on the vision of Armenia on the 17th meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity to be hosted by Armenia in 2026 and ongoing preparations. The Deputy Foreign Minister emphasized the commitment of Armenia aimed at convening inclusive COP17 with participation of all relevant stakeholders.

Robert Abisoghomonyan highlighted the pivotal role of the first global review of commitments under the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework (KMGBF) to be undertaken within the COP17 framework, particularly as the most effective means of ensuring transparency and accountability in efforts to halt and reverse biodiversity loss. In this context, he called for more active engagement in the preparatory process for COP17.

In his meetings, the Deputy Foreign Minister of Armenia touched upon the necessity of ensuring greater synergy among the three Rio Conventions on Climate Change (UNFCCC), Biological Diversity (CBD) and Combating Desertification (UNCCD) in order to effectively advance the global environmental agenda.
